Werribee Open Range Zoo Expansion

We provided Relevant Building Surveyor services to this zoo expansion.

The Building Code is not written with elephants in mind.

The project has delivered a world-first 21-hectare elephant habitat, providing a purpose-built home for nine elephants and a unique experience for the thousands of visitors who visit the sanctuary each week.

As Relevant Building Surveyor, Codus was proud to play a role in helping bring this unique vision to life.

The Building Code is not written with elephants in mind.

Every aspect of the project required careful assessment against building legislation while also considering elephant welfare, behaviour and long-term operational outcomes. Elements that would be straightforward on a typical project demanded a different level of thinking in this environment.

Structures needed to be exceptionally robust, while remaining sustainable, practical and fit for purpose. Even seemingly simple elements, such as exit signage, required careful consideration. Elephants are naturally curious, and design solutions needed to account for how they would interact with the built environment.

Projects like this demonstrate what is possible when innovation, collaboration and compliance work together.

We're proud to have supported a project that is setting new benchmarks for animal welfare, visitor experience and the future of zoological design
